Shrinking containers: our experience of reducing container size

Daniel Laird, MediaKind

This is a real world story of how we at MediaKind moved from delivering RPM based products to container-based solutions deployed using Kubernetes.

It will detail how we iteratively improved and adapted at each point and how we transformed our containers from being ‘VM like’ to following industry best practice whilst also remaining pragmatic at each stage. Ultimately we delivered small, effective containers that ensure we can develop and deliver efficiently whilst providing the customer with what they demand.

It will focus on the approach taken, tools used and the reasoning used at each stage.

Required audience experience:

Experience with container building

Objective of the talk:

The objective is to show how you can adapt to the “cloud native” environment in which we operate. It will share how you can move to containers and then optimise the container building process to ensure best practice is met and followed without a huge impact on the development teams.
